IASTED Fake Conferences

The IASTED Conferences are all-fake conferences. Editors of IASTED fake conferences do not know that they are included in the volumes as Editors by IASTED.
Nobody read the Proceedings before publishing.
For example see this:

  1. A New Fake, Junk, Bogus Conference of IASTED is going to be held in Crete, greece. The congressman Mr. Pericles Bourkas did not check any paper and any abstract and gave acceptance to any junk paper in IASTED volume.
    Impressive, but true!

As you know Greece and greek Goverment did not recognize state MACEDONIA. Several Colleagues asked Prof. Bourkas how in a 50-papers IASTED conference inside Greece, you can have 2 papers
from MACEDONIA and advertize the program on your site. Bourkas told that I did not check the Proceedings at all so "I am innocent". Means that from Greek national point of view this guy is innocent. But what about from the scientific point of view. Is he innocent? He had to check the quality of 50 papers. He confessed that he did not read any paper.
This email was sent to Prof. Papageorgiou from another non-greek professor working in Greece.
It is a real email and has been published in several blogs in Greece.

If Professor Bourkas had checked at least the abstracts of the papers, then he would have understood that 2 papers came from a Country that Greece refuses until now his existence.

So, Bourkas claimed that he did not read anything!

    This is the email

    Dear Mr. Papageorgiou

I wonder how a scientific conference organized by a Professor of the Technical Univ. of Athens with several greek Professors
in the committee did not see in a program of 50 scientific articles 2 papers from "MACEDONIA"

Finally, is there any control in this conference?
What is the role of a Professor of Technical University of Athens as Chairman?
    Is decorative?
Was this IASTED conference a conference with reviewers or not?
They have several professors from Greece in the program committee; if they do not check the countries of the authors,
do they check the scientific quality of the papers?
What is the Responsibility of Prof. Bourkas?

Is Omicsonline a scientific scam? Yes it is.

Is Omicsonline a scientific scam?

Yes it is.

If you have published scientific papers you will most probably get an email like the one bellow. Email like this come from the Omicsonline group and they come from either or addresses. They will either ask you to write a paper or attend a conference. In either case you will have to pay a fee.

Such conferences most probably don't exist, and the papers you can find on their website are not indexed in Pubmed. I suspect they are made up papers with made up authors or which is the worst case - authors don't even know they have published papers in these journals. It is possible that the names of scientists have been used without their knowledge and that they don't even know that they are the members of the editorial board, for example.

Create filter for such emails and send them to spam folder.

Not all Open Access publications are good. OMICS fake conferences. OMICS fake Journals.

Not all Open Access publications are good. Some are basic Nigerian scams, and I don’t mean that as a figment of speech, some literally are scams run out of Nigeria. They ask for money and will publish anything. Interestingly just yesterday it appears that some pseudoscientists got scammed, Scam Publisher Fools Swedish Cranks.

There is even a list of predatory journals, which appears to be down at the moment but here is a link to a copy of the list of predatory open access journals, with discussion on the different types of scams. Traditionally these predatory publishers spam professional mailing lists but now it looks like they are branching out to blog spaming.

For the last few days we have been getting blog spam from one of the publishers on the list, OMICS Publishing Group. I am not hyperlinking to them and I will explain why. A way to boost ones page rank (how well you do in google search) is by links, well duh every knows that. What people don’t know is that one way of doing that is through commenting on blogs. A search bot will search the whole page and if you leave a comment and a link in the comment the bot will register that link as coming from that page. It is a sort of Trojan horse method for picking up links. Most comments are legitimate and someone who is willing to take the time to leave a comment should get some link juice. OMICS, actually they have a bot doing it, is posting random, unrelated comments, about Open Access on any blog that has Open Access in the title.

More Bogus Conferences

A commentor  wrote in our blog this comment yesterday. It is quite interesting because the provided links are correct. We checked this information and it seems to be correct.

" I found this paper in Springer Verlag:

You can download the full paper from this link:

As you can check the IEEE Data Base (IEEEXplore) contains at the moment more than 85 crappy papers (coputer generated garbage). Before that, IEEE had removed 157 (one hundred and fifty seven — no 1 or 2) conference proceedings from its IEEEXplore repository as fake and bogus.

Many people paid the registration fees (700 or 800 USD) to have their papers published in IEEE Xplore. They had published them for a while and then IEEE deleted these fake conferences proceedings.

 Check it:  "

OMICS is a criminal organization. OMICS Fake Conferences. OMICS Bogus Conferences. OMICS Junk Conferences.

OMICS is a criminal organization. All academicians from all continents must avoid doing business with the OMICS (= COMICS) Group. Do not submit articles to OMICS. Do not agree to serve on their editorial boards. Do not review papers for OMICS bogus conferences or for OMICS bogus journals. Do not register for or attend their junk OMICS conferences. Also, be aware that OMICS has just established a separate fake brand called
that operates much the same as the bogus OMICS. Bogus OMICS may be experimenting with additional fake web brands designed to funnel people to the OMICS web pages.

Fake Conferences OMICS. Bogus Conferences OMICS. Junk Conferences OMICS. Scary and funny: fake researcher Peter Uhnemann on OMICS group Editorial Board #Journal SPAM

Many out there know there are journals out there that border on SPAM.  I have written about this often before (e.g., see For $&%# sake, Bentham Open Journals, leave me alone and Yet another SPAMMY Science publisher: Scientific and Academic Publishing and The Tree of Life: Really sick of Bentham Open Spam) as have many others (e.g., Open and Shut?: The Open Access Interviews: Matthew Honan and Academic spam and open access publishing - Per Ola Kristensson). UPDATE: forgot to include this link: Science SPAMMER of the month: OMICS publishing group But this one takes the cake.

There is a journal called "Molecular Biology" from the OMICS Publishing Group (for more on this publisher see Open and Shut?:

The Open Access Interviews: OMICS Publishing ...).

It seems new - as I cannot find any publications - but you never know - maybe they have been around a while and just have not gotten any submissions.

But I recommend everyone check out their Editorial Board.  In addition to listing Peter Deusberg (the controversial HIV denialist) there is an amazing person on their Board - Peter Uhnemann.

He is listed as being from the "Department of Oximology at Daniel-Duesentrieb Institute, Germany".  Sounds a bit strange right?

Well check out his Bio

And check out his research interests

It is pretty wacky right?  Well it turns out, as some might have guessed - it is made up.  The reason I know this is - is that Burkhard Morgenstern from the University of Goettingen let me know (in fact he is the one who alerted me to the whole story).

He sent me something he wrote on Facebook which I am posting here:

I'm delighted to inform you that Peter Uhnemann from the
Daniel-Duesentrieb Institute in Germany was just appointed
editor of the OMICS journal "Molecular Biology":
For those of you who don't know Peter Uhnemann: he is a fake
person invented by the German satirical magazine Titanic.
They created an FB account for him to make fun of social
networks (he soon befriended on FB with various German

For those of you who don't know Daniel Duesentrieb: this is
the German name of the Walt Disney comic figure Gyro Gearloose.

For those of you who don't know the OMICS journals: these
are junk journals spamming around invitations to join their
 editorial boards.
On their web page they say that

"election of the “right” editor for a journal is one of the
most important decisions made by OMICS Publishing Group ...
Editors, Executive Editors & Editor-in- Chief of journals
must be senior researchers, e.g. chaired professors."

As it looks, Peter Uhnemann from the Daniel-Duesentrieb
 Institute meets these criteria.

It is both hilarious and a bit terrifying.  Now - mind you - it is possible that this journal could end up with some papers worth looking at.  But clearly, the Editorial process at this journal is probably going to be a bit, well, circumspect.

OMICS (or better COMICS). OMICS is a fake, bogus, junk, mock, scam, sham publisher and must be reported immediately.

The following text is from WIKIPEDIA:

Criticism of publishing practices[edit]

Numerous complaints have been made about the publishing and other practices of the OMICS Publishing Group and its affiliates. The company director has asserted that its activities are legitimate and ethical.[4]
An investigative report by The Chronicle of Higher Education stated that journal articles published by OMICS may undergo little or no peer review.[5] It was also suggested that OMICS provides lists of scientists as journal editors to create the impression of familiarity or scientific legitimacy, even though these are editors in name only and are not involved in the review or editing process.[5] An editor-in-chief who was contacted by Science stated that he had never handled any papers;[8] in an interview with The Hindu, another said he had not been informed of his purported editorship.[9] The company has been slow to remove the names of editorial board members who requested to terminate their relationship with OMICS activities.[4]
Some observers have described the publisher as "predatory", insofar as authors who have submitted papers have been sent invoices after their manuscripts were accepted for publication despite the lack of a robust peer-review process. Charges may be as high as US$3600.[5] One author received an invoice for US$2700 after her paper was accepted; this fee was not mentioned in the email message OMICS sent her to solicit a submission.[7] These observations have led critics to assert that the main purpose of the publisher is commercial rather than academic.[5][6]
Other criticisms of OMICS include the publication of pseudoscientific articles,[5] deceptive marketing practices,[3][8] targeting of young investigators or those in lower income regions,[8][9] and the advertising of academic or government scientists as speakers or organizers for OMICS conferences without their agreement.[4][8]
The director and founder of OMICS, Srinubabu Gedela, responded to these criticisms by stating that his organization wishes to expand access to scientific knowledge and has 20,000 editorial board members and 500 employees.[4][5]

Fake Conferences Brebbia. Bogus Conferences Brebbia. Junk Conferences Brebbia.

We have received this comment in our recent post and we think that it is worth reposting it. The anonymous commentor says:

Hi, guys google: Fake Conferences Brebbia Bogus Conferences Brebbia
You will find this:
You will see some serious complaints for "Prof." Carlos Brebbia who is a fake professor and a professional charlatan.

 1) I used to know some one who used to work for this so called (Wessex) institute!! Run by a self assigned Professor!! Brebbia as a non profit making institute, it is a big scam. Wessex Institute is a big money making machine for Mr Brebbia by offering very low quality courses and conferences at very high prices. The last thing is in Mr Brebbia's mind, is any contribution to training & education. Mr Brebbia keeps WIT as a non-profit organisation by draining out all the profit that WIT makes through other bogus companies that he has set up, charging WIT bogus fees. Mr Brebbia is basically a charlatan who has found a way of making easy money from trusting academics and through his chain of corrupt academics who knowingly buy his low quality products and services for other favors in return.

 2) I have attended a conference organised by WIT and bought couple of books from WIT Press. I also know some one who used to work for this so called (Wessex) institute!! Mr Brebbia is basically a sucessful charlatan who has found a way of making easy money from some trusting academics who unknowingly fall victim and through his chain of corrupt academics who knowingly buy his low quality products and services, through their institutes for other favours in return.

Fake Conferences IASTED

Many new fake conferences IASTED have been announced for 2014. These IASTED conferences are completely fake. They are money making machinbes and you should not attend them. My colleagues that attended an IASTED conference in the past, came in the department with very very bad impressions. I have also attended an IASTED conference in Canada and got the idea quickly. If your paper is worthy DO NOT waste it by publishing it on IASTED conferences. They are not professional conferences neither the conferences have anything to do with science. Anyone can publish anything in IASTED. No reviews... When I sent an article for publication, it has been accepted the next day without any comments!!! SO if you want just to publish... IASTED may help you but if you are a researcher with a worthy background and a professional, just don't look at IASTED. Reference:

However, IASTED is not in the list of the crook, academic criminal Mr. Jeffrey Beall:
See this:

I was surprised when one of our editors told me that the name of Ashdin Publishing is found in the list of “Beall’s List: Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers” ( and I was surprised because of the following reasons:
  1. The author did not just mention the criteria for determining predatory open-access publishers, but he insisted on mentioning the full names and details of the publishers as well.
  2. Some of these criteria, for determining predatory open-access publishers, can be applied on a huge number of publishers (include some of the large and famous ones), but he did not mention any of them.
  3. Some of the publishers names are removed from this list without saying the reasons for this removal.
After I received the e-mail below, I am not any more surprised. Now, I am sure that the author, irrespective the good reasons he may has for preparing this list, wants to blackmail small publishers to pay him.
I invite all of you to read what people say commenting on his article (
Nature is removed and constantly the few negative posts against Beals article.
Dr Gillian Dooley (Special Collections Librarian at Flinders University):
Jeffrey Beall’s list is not accurate to believe. There are a lot of personal biases of Jeffrey Beall. Hindawi still uses heavy spam emailing. Versita Open still uses heavy spam emailing. But these two publishers have been removed in Jeffrey Beall’s list recently. There is no reason given by Jeffrey Beall why they were removed. Jeffrey Beall is naive in his analysis. I think some other reliable blog should be created to discuss more fruitfully these issues. His blog has become useless.
Mark Robinson (Acting Editor, Stanford Magazine):
It is a real shame that Jeffrey Beall using’s blog to promote his predatory work. Jeffrey Beall just simply confusing us to promote his academic terrorism. His list is fully questionable. His surveying method is not scientific. If he is a real scientist then he must do everything in standard way without any dispute. He wanted to be famous but he does not have the right to destroy any company name or brand without proper allegation. If we support Jeffrey Beall’s work then we are also a part of his criminal activity. Please avoid Jeffrey Beall’s fraudulent and criminal activity.
Now a days anyone can open a blog and start doing things like Jeffrey Beall which is harmful for science and open access journals. Nature should also be very alert from Jeffrey Beall who is now using Nature’s reputation to broadcast his bribery and unethical business model.
Now, I invite all of you in order to take all precautions and not being misled by this blackmailer.

I maintain list of predatory open access publishers in my blog

Your publisher name is also included in 2012 edition of my predatory open
access publishers list. My recent article in Nature journal can be read

I can consider re-evaluating your journals for 2013 edition of my list. It
takes a lot my time and resources. The fee for re-evaluation of your
publisher is USD 5000. If your publisher name is not in my list, it will
increase trustworthiness to your journals and it will draw more article
submissions. In case you like re-evaluation for your journals, you can
contact me.
